Marriages have always been a defining part of a person's life. And the wedding ceremonies for them are equally important. A series of functions makes a wedding complete. One if them is Wedding Shower also known as the bridal shower. It is a less formal and more of a practical and fun function. It is held before the wedding ceremony, from two months to two weeks before the real event.
It is taken as an informal little gathering and generally no invites are given out. Friends are told by sending out emails or maybe on phone. But sometimes people do publish invitation cards and send them out. The venue is mostly the home of the bride-to-be or the house of a close friend. But other places are also sometimes used like restaurants etc. Wedding Shower is held at the evenings but not as dinner parties.
In today's modern world, parties follow a theme. The theme is seen in the dresses of the bride ad friends, the dcor of the place and also in the gift covers. The activities and games also sometimes follow the theme. Generally and traditionally, only women and female friends of the bride are invited to the party but nowadays a liberal function having couples or male guests is also seen.
The main purpose of the party is to give presents to the bride. All the guests are expected to bring gifts. In Europe, lists of required items are made and the friends choose from it to ensure a practical gift. The history of gift giving is old. The Wedding Shower was held so as to help the bride collect some commodities for the wedding if she was unable to make a decent dowry. This helped the wedding to take place. However, today the significance of the function has somehow changed.
